1. The Founding of the Centre
The story of Urgyen Sangharakshita Retreat Centre began through the vision and dedication of Dhammachari Anagarik Chandrabodhi, a senior Indian Dhammachari and mindfulness teacher. While residing at Vajrok Retreat Centre in England, Anagarik Chandrabodhi formed a close spiritual friendship with Bhante Urgyen Sangharakshita, exchanging numerous letters regarding the growth of the Dhamma in India.
2. The Land Donation & Sangharakshita’s Blessing
During this period, generous Buddhist supporters from Nanded—the Narwade Brothers—offered a scenic parcel of land located 35 km outside Nanded city near Warakwadi. Anagarik Chandrabodhi brought photographs of the site to England to show Bhante Sangharakshita. Impressed by its peaceful landscape and natural surroundings, Bhante noted that the countryside reminded him of England.
With a vision to establish a retreat centre named in Bhante’s honor, Anagarik Chandrabodhi formally petitioned Bhante Sangharakshita. After consultation with senior Order members, Bhante provided his formal written consent to name the site the Urgyen Sangharakshita Meditation Centre.
3. Development & Architecture
The physical layout of the centre was designed by Order member Nagashree, incorporating peaceful walking paths, landscaped gardens, and functional retreat quarters. The land was formally inaugurated in 2001, transforming a barren countryside into a thriving green oasis.
